Grades, Offers, and the Auction House

Use the appraisal grade to judge a buyer's offer, and take only your best canvas to the third-floor auction.

Cash in Paint to Get Rich comes from selling paintings. The grade you get when you finish a canvas is the appraisal buyers use. Studio size changes how good those offers get. The auction house is a separate, slower sale for your best piece.

Read the grade before you haggle

Finishing a painting grants a grade and Stars. Stars are a Prestige counter, covered in the Prestige guide. The grade is what tells you whether a buyer's offer is fair.

What the grade actually measures is not settled. It may follow how many strokes you used, or how complex the finished picture is. Until that rule is spelled out, treat the grade as the number you compare with the offer, not as a style score you can guess from the thumbnail.

Put the painting on a table. A buyer eventually offers. You can:

  • Negotiate, which can raise what that one painting pays.
  • Sell, which adds the agreed Cash immediately.
  • Decline, and wait for another passer-by while the piece stays on display.

Negotiating is worth doing on a strong grade. A weak grade is still worth selling if you need a green button right now; the next canvas can be the one you hold for a better offer.

Why studio size changes the offer

The amount buyers pay is described as tied to how far the studio has expanded. More of the 33 upgrades means more buyers and better offers, not just a larger building. That is why a sale should usually pay for the next affordable green button. Button types that are named include artists, walls, and ceiling. The live button is the source of its exact cost.

Hired NPC painters can be unlocked from those buttons and will paint without you. Their income is described as too small to carry Prestige requirements. Use them as background Cash. Keep finishing your own canvases if you need Stars and sold-painting counts.

Auction house

After the studio is expanded far enough, an auction house opens on the third floor. A painting sold there is described as paying much more than a normal table offer. You can run it only once every five minutes, so take the highest-graded painting you have, not a filler canvas.

  1. Confirm the auction house is actually open. It is not available in a bare starter stall.
  2. Pick the best grade currently on your tables.
  3. Sell that piece at the auction.
  4. Use the five-minute gap to paint or to step on a green button. Do not stand idle waiting to auction a low grade.

If you only have ordinary grades, a normal negotiated table sale is the better use of the canvas. Saving every painting for the auction stalls the Cash you need for buttons.

Cash versus the Prestige pile

Two uses of Cash compete:

Situation What to do with Cash Why
Studio still missing affordable buttons Step on the next progression button Expansion is what improves later offers
You are short of the Cash line in the Prestige menu Hold enough to meet that line, then Prestige The reset deletes Cash, including the amount you were required to hold
Auction is off cooldown and you hold a top grade Auction that piece It is the highest documented single-sale price, on a five-minute lock
Only hired painters are working Go paint a canvas yourself Their sales do not move Prestige requirements in a meaningful way

There is no published formula that converts a grade into a Cash number. Compare the offer on screen with the grade you were just given, and use the upgrade payback calculator only as arithmetic on numbers you type in yourself.

How do I sell a painting?

Finish the canvas, place it on a display table, and wait for a buyer. Negotiate if you want a higher offer, then press Sell. The best grades are the ones to take to the third-floor auction, which opens once every five minutes after the studio is expanded.

When should I Prestige?

When the Prestige menu shows that you have met its Cash, sold-painting, and Star lines, and you are ready to lose the studio. Press the Prestige button on the left, then Begin Prestige, and confirm. The Museum requires Prestige level 3.
